HBAS Free Little Art Gallery (FLAGS) Newsletter - November
Hi FLAG bearers!
This is the second monthly newsletter updating you all on our Free Little Art Galleries (FLAGS) program which is now well established in many locations across Hobsons Bay. We have been very excited by the way in which our communities have embraced the FLAGs, with artists of all ages and abilities making mini-art works in a wide range of mediums. These have been proudly displayed and many have already been exchanged!
Our feature FLAG location this month is Mambourin, a disability support centre in Queens Street, Altona. Mambourin has eight community hubs across Melbourne’s west and has been supporting people with a disability for almost fifty years. They aim to connect people to every opportunity and supporting them to get what they want out of life by offering a huge range of services they like to call choices.
The picture below shows Daniel, one of the Mambourin community members, with Nicole, the manager of the Centre, alongside the Mambourin FLAG. Daniel has been receiving supports from Mambourin for a number of years and enjoys a wide range of activities, including arts and crafts, cooking and bowling. Daniel especially loves Mambourin’s community access program, which gives him the opportunity to visit local op shops where he finds supplies for his artwork!

Click on the link below to see a short video featuring an interview with Daniel, where you can hear for yourself his passion for creative activity. We are very grateful to Daniel for sharing his enthusiasm for the FLAGs. Daniel beautifully embodies the philosophy behind the FLAG project: to make art for the sheer joy of creating something and the pleasure of sharing it!

Below is a close-up of one of Daniel’s woolen pom-poms, created using materials he acquired from one of his trips to the local op shops. Next to this is an intriguing hand-painted jig saw puzzle work, created by one of the staff at Mambourin. Mambourin’s community access group members have all enjoyed walking around to visit and contribute to the other FLAGs in the neighborhood.
