Featured Artist: David Payne
I enjoy working in all mediums, including watercolour, oil, acrylic, charcoal, pastels, ink.
I became interested in art around 2001 whilst working in the UK at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games. I couldn’t sleep one night and turned on the discovery channel at 4am to find a Canadian artist called Bob Ross doing an oil painting demonstration, and at the end he said” anybody can do this, give it a try” so I did.
I became aware of the many weekend art workshops all over the UK. So each weekend for a number of years I would combine my love for discovery and travel with my new interest in art and travelled all over the UK each weekend learning from a variety of UK artists including watercolorists’ Ron Ranson, Trevor Waugh. Ink Painting with Elda Abramson, pastel with Margaret Evans, and even Chinese water colour.
Back in Australia, I continued to combine travel and art attending workshops in Victoria and NSW, with watercolorists, Joseph Zbuchvic, Alvaro Castagnet, Greg Allen, David Taylor, Malcolm Beattie and Robert Wade. Oil painting workshops included Warwick Fuller, John Wilson and Colly Whisson.
In the USA I have attended workshops with Susan Lyon and Scott Burdick. In 2013 I took time off work to travel to Florence to attend the Michael Angel Academy of Art, and then on to the UK to the studio academy of Nicholas Beer to study the art of getting a likeness called ‘Sight Size’.
I have been a member of HBAS since 2002, and here in Hobson Bay I think we are very lucky to have a history of many wonderful local artists and teachers including Ray Hewitt, Ted Dansey, Karin Zellar, Bill Kerr, Vicky Tyrell, the Cragg family among many, many other very creative local artists.
I have been conducting weekend workshops and life drawing sessions for a number of years, and plan to continue in 2022, if anyone is interested in being notified of future workshops please contact me at [email protected]. (0422991457)
Finally, a big thanks to all the many hard working and generous committee members during my time at HBAS especially Kirsten Craggs.
For those interested in Bob Ross, there is a film of his life currently on Netflix.
