Since moving to Hobsons Bay and joining the HBAS 2 years ago, exciting new ways of seeing and creating have opened up to me. I was so fortunate to have been welcomed into the Wednesday morning social painting group at the HBAS. These experienced artists generously offered advice to this rank beginner, patiently putting up with my repeated questions and demonstrating through their own artwork how to observe the magic in everyday life. When the wonderful Gaye Pereira-Jackson offered me a place in her Bali painting trip, I grasped this with both hands and came to believe, over 7 days with her, that I too could become an ‘artist’. The learning has just gone on from there!
I have also been fortunate to now live in Williamstown, with bike and walking access to the stunning Jawbone and Laverton Creek wetlands that have been a source of inspiration for my artwork. I marvel at the ever-changing landscapes, cloud-scapes and birdlife, all of which motivate me to keep learning so that I might capture something of their beauty visually. This learning has been nourished by the terrific workshops run by HBAS. Three have been most influential for me: a weekend linocut print workshop run by Larissa Macfarlane; a weekend watercolour workshop run by Julian Bruere; and a Monday Activity Demonstration (by Zoom!) of portrait painting in oils run by Ben Winspear. I try to do something in each of these varied media regularly.
