FLAGS - Free Little Art Galleries

We are delighted to share the good news that our Free Little Art Galleries (FLAGS) program is now up and running in 14 locations across Hobsons Bay. With the help of a Hobsons Bay City Council Reconnection Grant and a lot of enthusiastic work from HBAS and community volunteers, Hobsons Bay Art Society (HBAS) has been able to provide publicly accessible mini-exhibition spaces for the free exchange of art.
These FLAGS take the form of specially designed mini-galleries for displaying small 3D (eg sculpture) and 2D (eg painting) works. The galleries have been beautifully designed and hand made by the Hobsons Bay Mens Shed – thanks fellas! The principle of the Free Little Art Galleries is the same as that of Free Libraries: take what you want and give what you can. To help share the “Make art, Give art, Take art, Love art!” joy, we have provided Resource boxes in each of the locations, loaded with art goodies such as paints, mini-canvases, pebbles and wood slices to paint on and materials to carve or shape.
The FLAGs and Resource boxes can be found at the following locations:
  • Altona Library
  • Altona Meadows Library
  • Newport Library
  • Williamstown Library
  • Laverton Community Hub
  • Vietnamese Association, Altona
  • Trinity Church, Altona
  • Wood St Art Space, Laverton
  • Walker Close Community Centre, Altona North
  • Seabrook Community Centre
  • Mambourin disability service provider, Altona
  • U3A Altona
  • Truganina Explosives Reserve
  • Louis Joel Gallery, Altona
The FLAGs will be available all the time so come along and see what others have created and take materials that help you create your own miniature artwork at home or onsite.
At the launch of the project on 18 August 2022, the HBAS volunteers and the project ‘champions’ from each site spent a cheery morning custom decorating their FLAG and making little art works to get the creative ball rolling.

And here is a FLAG all ready to find its new home at the end of the launch day! We’re looking forward to seeing what other mini-art works will be exhibited and which ones will be taken into new homes!
