Newport Lakes -  18th June 2022 at 10 am

Picture
Hobsons Bay Arts Society (HBAS), with the support of the Hobsons Bay Council through its Make it Happen Grants Program, and in partnership with local historical and environmental groups is proud to lead the delivery of the “Seeing Our Home” program. This project brings together local residents with art instructors, local historians, and community groups to use theme-based urban sketching to deepen our understanding of the wonderful community in which we live. Due to the current COVID situation, this months program consists of a live online presentation from a local expert followed by an online instructor-guided sketching workshop.

For our eighth “Seeing Our Home” Community Urban Sketching event we will be at the tranquil and beautiful Newport lakes with the Friends of Newport Lakes as our host. Newport Lakes is a bushland oasis created from a former bluestone quarry in the middle of busy Newport. The 33 -hectare park has been extensively revegetated using native plants, with over 200 species of plants and 165 species of birds recorded there. It is a perfect location for quiet reflection or inspiring exploration, creating an ideal setting for our sketching workshop. We will be guided through a presentation on the park and then we will have the distinguished watercolourist, Ted Dansey, lead a sketching workshop focusing on some of the key scenes in the area. (See images below).

The program will be open to all levels of experience, particularly encouraging beginners. The activity will start with a 20-minute presentation followed by a 45 minute guided sketching workshop led by Ted. You can register through Eventbrite, just follow the link below.  If you cannot get to the Lakes then you can catchup by streaming the presentation and the sketching workshop from our Facebook group (see link below), it will be live a couple of days after the event.

  • Registration for the onsite event at Newport Lakes
  • "Seeing Our Home" Facebook Group with the recording of the event

If for any reason the onsite event is cancelled (and we have had a few COVID driven changes) then everyone will be notified to meet online and we will hold the event via the HBAS Facebook event site (details will be sent to you).

Looking forward to seeing you at Newport Lakes.

The video of the presentation and workshop is now available:
We had a wonderful day at Newport Lakes on Saturday, the sun was shinning and the breeze was gentle.  You can view the presentation and watch the watch workshop by following the link below to our "Seeing Our Home" Facebook Group:

Also, have a look at Ted's sketch in the photo gallery below along with a photo of the scene he sketched.  The focus for the day was on negative painting (have a look at the trees, they are all negatively painted) and also painting with a limited pallet.  Ted used two colours in this painting, Quinacridone Gold and Phthalo Blue, the work emphasised the importance of getting the right value (darkness) in the paint through controlling the amount of water and pigment in the paint mix...it was a great session.

This event is supported by Hobsons Bay City Council through its Make It Happen Grants program
