Please see the below write up by Gaye Pereira-Jackson on the Jessie Rose Watercolours Workshop as taken from the May edition of the Pelicans Palette. It sounds like everyone had a great time and learned some new techniques! Below is a slide show of the images in the article above if you wish to see them more clearly. After all the hard work of our volunteers and committee members it was wonderful to see the success of our 5x7 Art Prize launch. Everyone worked so well together pivoting as new challenges arose and situations changed. We had a great turn out to the Friday night launch with many artists and guests commenting on the wonderful talent put into all the works on display. I am certainly glad that I didn't have to judge because the standard of all the work was amazing! Brendan our vice president opened speeches welcoming everyone and thanking all those involved in putting together the show before handing over to the Mayor of Hobstons Bay Cr Peter Hemphill. Peter also thanked all involved and touched on the importance of Art to our community and emphasised that the council will continue to fund the arts in our community which is helped by the support of Qenos who has been sponsoring the 5x7 competition since it's beginning. Then he announced the award winners and handed out certificates to those in attendance. It was fantastic to see red dots going up during the night as purchases of artwork were made and to watch people enjoying discussing the artworks and the refreshments and nibbles. Saturday afternoon saw a gathering equal to that of the night before with the presentation of the school awards. It was heartwarming seeing so many kids excited to see their work on display pointing out their works to their proud parents and friends. Once again one of the hot topics of conversation was how good all the works were across both the school and open section. Manager for the Louis Joel Centre Karen Ingram welcomed everyone and spoke of the importance of art in our lives drawing on how that is reflected in the way the artists used the theme “What Matters” in the artworks on display. She then gave out the awards to excited students and teachers from the winning schools. This was followed by Brendan again thanking everyone for all the hard work put into making the exhibition possible with a special thank you to Atelier Art Supplies for their continued support of the society as sponsors for the school awards. Many of the families stayed to have a further look around after the presentations and a few more red dots were even added! All in all it was a great opening weekend and I am looking forward to visiting the exhibition again myself to have another look. Kathryn Price. March's activity night was presented by Jeff Gauci concentrating on his watercolour landscape techniques and works. Please enjoy the write up below by Kristina Love of the night taken from the April edition of the Pelican's Palette.
